Pitt-Greensburg Veterans Week Events

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will hold a series of events during the week of Nov. 9 through Nov. 15 to recognize the service and sacrifice of military veterans and their families.

Todd DePostino interviews a military veteranThe week opens Saturday, Nov. 9, with a gathering of the Veterans Breakfast Club (VBC) in the Hempfield Room (Chambers Hall). Veterans and non-veterans are invited to this breakfast that allows US military veterans to share their stories. The goal of the VBC is to build a community that understands and values the experiences of military veterans. Doors open at 8 a.m., followed by breakfast at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., Todd DePastino, historian, VBC executive director, and emcee, will encourage veterans to share their stories. There is no charge for breakfast, but attendees are asked to RSVP to betty@veteransbreakfastclub.org or 412-623-9029.

Pitt-Greensburg welcomes the community to its annual Wreath Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11:11 a.m. at the Flag Poles in front of Chambers Hall. This year’s keynote speaker is PA State Representative Eric Nelson, a US Marine veteran. A native of Hempfield Township, Nelson serves the 57th Legislative District. Three Pitt-Greensburg students will place the wreath, and Tom Beaver, USAF veteran will play “Taps” as part of the ceremony.

Following the Wreath Ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to attend the Veterans Day Luncheon hosted by the campus chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national freshmen honor society. This luncheon, which is free to veterans and their families, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hempfield Room (Chambers Hall).

Pitt-Greensburg’s ROTC Cadets will host a Try It Out: Army Mini PT event on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Chambers Lawn. Participants can try their skill—and stamina—on four parts of the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), including the hand-release push-up; the overhead ball toss; the spring-drag-carry; and the plank. 

The week will end with the annual campus Red Out--Turn the campus Red to Remember Everyone Deployed on Friday, Nov. 15. Participants are asked to wear red or the special RED OUT t-shirt, and meet at the campus flag poles at noon for a photo.
