College in High School - How It Works

For Students and Families

During class registration in the spring, high school students currently in their sophomore or junior years will sign up for the Introduction to Education course as an elective. This course will be taught by a district high school teacher who will adjust the university-provided materials to meet the difference in class time and school year. The curriculum is provided to the districts and teachers at no charge. Students who choose to take the course for university credit would pay the $75/credit fee ($225 for a 3-credit university course).

Please Note: The course name "Introduction to Education" will be reflected on the students' high school transcript, and "Social Foundations of Education" will be reflected on the students’ University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg transcript. However, they are the same course.

Cost: $225/class

Requirements:

  • Be a current sophomore or junior, enrolling into their junior or senior year
  • Attend a school that has implemented the program
  • GPA requirements are set by the school district

Students in schools that are implementing this program will be given a link for the application.

Applications may be sent in to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (via mail or email) or turned into directly to your designated high school teacher or guidance counselor. Please check with your district’s procedures for their College in High School policies.

For Administrators and Teachers

We are excited to expand this program to more Pennsylvania high school districts! This program offers teachers the opportunity to inspire the next generation of educators by sharing their expertise and passion with students—at no cost to you or your district! This initiative is about more than just education—it's about providing students with high-quality academic opportunities and affordable resources, no matter their circumstances. Scheduling is now open for the 2025-2026 academic year.

If your district already uses EdRising, you can seamlessly integrate this curriculum into your plans. Other courses, like Educational Psychology and Special Education, will also be available as part of the College in High School Education Program.

If you are a teacher or administrator who is interested in participating in Pitt-Greensburg’s College in High School Program, please send all inquiries to Dr. Melissa J. Marks, Director of the Education Department.
